Statement on antisemitic social media comments from Iranian embassy

The Coalition condemns the propagation of antisemitic social media content by the Iranian embassy.

It is clear that the antisemitic ideology propagated by the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) regime and its terror proxies is being spread via social media. It appears there is a deliberate strategy behind these posts by the IRI regime to spread that antisemitism in the Australian community and online.

It is incredibly concerning that extremely disturbing content is being actively promoted by the most senior official of the IRI regime in Australia. This has been occurring for a number of months and it is an issue which I raised directly with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials at Senate Estimates in October.

Promotion of antisemitism is abhorrent and dangerous, and is a continuation of a long line of appalling behaviour by the IRI regime. Whilst I welcome the condemnation of these comments by a Departmental official, we have seen rising antisemitism in Australia, including hate-fuelled acts outside the Sydney Opera House, and the intimidation of Australian Jewish communities as well as towards visiting families of those murdered and kidnapped by the Iran-backed terrorist group Hamas.

The Albanese Labor Government needs to condemn these IRI posts and reconsider its refusal to adopt the majority of the recommendations of this year’s Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee’s inquiry into Human Rights abuses in Iran.
