Minister’s failure to act on antisemitism in the arts
The Albanese Government and Minister Burke have been exposed on their failure to respond to rising antisemitism within Australia’s arts industry.
Concerned Australians and members of Australia’s Jewish community have consistently raised their concerns with the Minister over the misuse of Creative Australia’s funding and grants programs.
Earlier this month media reported that the Minister failed to act decisively to remove a board member who made antisemitic comments from his taxpayer funded position at Creative Australia.
During Senate Estimates hearings this week, the Minister representing the Minister for the Arts, Senator Tim Ayres, conceded that Music Council member Fred Leone’s social media comments were "dreadful" and "reprehensible" – however Mr Leone remains in his taxpayer funded board position the Minister appointed him to.
Australians deserve reassurance that taxpayer funding isn’t being misappropriated to spread antisemitic comments or promote extremist ideologies.
The Minister needs to immediately commit to a comprehensive review of Creative Australia’s grants approval process and council appointments.
The Albanese Government needs to send a strong message that antisemitic behaviour is not acceptable in the community, and not acceptable in the arts sector.
